Kohlrabi8

Its been a great week here at South Bay Foodies, and its looking to be an even more eventful weekend.  First, we kicked off the week with a review of the awesome Cham Korean Bistro in Pasadena.  That was quickly followed up with some tips on how to enjoy the new movie Julie & Julia.  And now, we’re getting ready to fight; Foodie Fight.

The folks over at Foodie Fights have come up with a great concept:  they stage a battle royale for up to six foodies from all over.  Its kind of like “Iron Chef” for food bloggers.  The contestants are tasked to create a single course using two ingredients.  After coming up with their dish (which could be just about anything; there are no rules regarding the course), the participants document their recipes and post the results on their blog for all to see…including the judges.  The judges award points based on creativity, methodology, writing, and most importantly, the dish they would rather eat.  Readers also get involved by casting votes for their favorite entries, although the judges’ votes carry much more weight.

So I’ve been reading Foodie Fights for a few weeks and decided to throw my name into the ring.  I’m always up for a challenge so I figured, “why not”?  Fortunately, I was chosen for this weeks battle, the ninth in the series.  Unfortunately, one of the ingredients is a real ringer: kohlrabi.  Pictured above, its a veggie I’ve never had before and one I can’t find in my local grocery stores.

So here’s where I need your help!  I need YOU to do two things:

1.  Please tell me kohlrabi  is available somewhere in LA! I don’t care if I have to drive (too) far to get it, I’m just hoping to not have to make a substitution in this battle.  If you know where to find some, leave a comment or send an email to info@southbayfoodies.com.  You can also send a tweet to @southbayfoodies on Twitter.  Or Facebook me…MySpace me….heck, send me a smoke signal!

2.  On Tuesday, go to the Foodie Fights website and vote!  I will say, vote for the entry you feel is best.  I’m up against some stiff competition so it should be a good challenge.  However, I am going to do my best to make it easy for you to vote for me!  I’ve put together a great menu that’s sure to have your mouth watering.

Of course, all this has me saying, in the words of the Chairman, “Allez cuisine!”

  1. Michael, try finding that vegetable at an international grocery store. Also, there was a korean dish mentioned I would love to have the ingredients and directions on how to make. I really like Korean foods.

Oh, by the way, I’m your cousin.

GOOD LUCK, KIDDO, I’m proud of you.

  2. Hey, Cousin Doris! I did look at several international stores but ended up finding it in one of the gourmet grocery stores around town. If i come across some good Korean recipes, I will be sure to shoot them your way! Doing my best to keep you all proud…
