After months of tracking them, I finally caught up with the food truck known as “The Beast”, the mobile kitchen of Grill ‘Em All, winner of Food Network’s first season of The Great Food Truck Race.

The Food:

When I surveyed the line up of contestants for the Food Network’s first season of The Great Food Truck Race, my mission became clear: sample the cuisine of each contestant.

With five of the seven trucks being based in LA, this seemed like an easily achievable feat.  In due time, I crossed them off my list as I had the opportunity to visit with them and their crews.

One truck eluded me though, the heavy metal inspired Grill ‘Em All, who ended up winning it all in the race.  Either their stops were either too far out of my way, or I missed them when they came to the South Bay, or their lines were too long when I did catch them locally.

Finally, the stars aligned and I managed to catch them during a lunch stop in Marina Del Rey.  To make the situation that much more satisfying, when I arrived at the trucks location, they were just pulling up and my crew were second in line! (I have to give a shout out to my fellow South Bay Foodies Margaret and Annalise for calling inviting me out for this one. Thanks!)

Chef Ryan takes Annalise's order: The Molly Hatchet.

Within a few minutes of arriving, Chef Ryan had the truck set up and was taking orders.  The kitchen crew was also ready to get down to business and orders were being served in no time at all.  With our burger baskets in tow, we headed back to the office to dig in.

Annalise ordered the Molly Hatchet, a burger with seared fennel smoked sausage gravy smoked bacon, and a drizzle of maple syrup.

With our caloric intake in mind, Margaret and I decided the split the legendary Behemoth.  True to its name, this burger comes with a meaty burger patty, smoked cheddar cheese, apple wood smoked bacon, and beer soaked onions, all stuffed between two grilled cheese sandwiches as buns.

The Behemoth. How do you bite this thing!?

For Nicole (who couldn’t join us at the truck but was waiting for us back at the office), I ordered the Waste ‘Em All, a burger served with marinated green chiles, pepper jack cheese, and beer soaked onions.

The Waste 'Em All.

To Nicole’s dismay, the patty on the Waste ‘Em All was a undercooked to her well-done liking so we swapped.  I must say I was a little disappointed.  That Behemoth was good eatin!  In my opinion, the grilled cheese “buns” made the difference by adding a cripsy, buttery experience to the burger, cheese, and pleasantly salty bacon.  I’m not a fan of chiles in excess so I scraped them off the Waste ‘Em All and enjoyed the pepper jack and onions.

In the end, we were all glad that we had finally tracked down the Grill ‘Em All truck and sampled their award winning cuisine.  I’m looking forward to crossing paths with them again!

If you’re looking for Grill ‘Em All in the South Bay, you can find them this Saturday, December 11, at Truck N’ Toys in San Pedro!  Click here for more details.

  1. Did you get the Itis after the Behemoth as I did? Good burger–fave part for me might be the onions. Could not fathom eating the whole thing, I’d probably have to sleep it off all afternoon under my desk.

    1. Yeah, I was running a little slow afterward. Not to mention i had more beef than you with finishing off Nicole’s burg. When you crash under your desk, make sure you set your phone to “send all calls to vmail”. LOL

  2. I had the Behemoth to myself and it about took me out. Some serious food coma. Next time I’m getting the Dee Snider.

Good to see you all at the truck!
