Easterner’s longing for a taste of home won’t have to go to far for authentic cheese steaks and deli sandwiches. Recently opened in Torrance Crossroads, Philly’s Best has all of that and more.
Philly’s Best has been serving Southern California since 1992. The Torrance shop is their first South Bay location.
To keep their sandwiches as authentic as possible, all of the ingredients are Philly-style including Boar’s Head meat and Amoroso rolls; the bread is flown in directly from Philly!
Along with the breads and meats, the toppings and sides are authentic too. Store brand Sweet peppers and hoagie spread keep the sandwiches seasoned while thirsts are sated with Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer and Frank’s Sodas.
During their grand opening in June, I was able to sample several of their sandwiches. Being a true carnivore, the cheese steak was my favorite. The tender steak was seasoned perfectly (I didn’t add any salt or pepper) and I kept the toppings simple with just grilled onions.
The chicken sandwich was also a hit. I think the soft, fresh bread played a big part in my enjoyment of these sandwiches. Each bite was perfect.
The menu is rounded out with fries and onion rings. Burgers are also available as well as chicken fingers on the kid’s menu.
And while it might not have anything to do with Philly, I was glad to see Fanta and Coke Zero on tap at the soda fountain. While more shops are carrying Coke Zero, not too many offer Fanta…not to mention three different flavors!
Philly’s Best is in a great location but the neighbors might think otherwise. They’re right next to a Subway restaurant. I think the folks who might have been going to Subway for steak or chicken sandwiches will soon be making a switch.

So can you order your cheesesteak ‘wit wiz’? 🙂
Good question! I’ve had it that way before but I didn’t think to ask them during my visit. Now I have a reason to go back! (as if I needed one) 😀
